Never Walk Alone 2013

Video essay:
Never Walk Alone sees again Shara Nelson’s world weary protagonist marching on the streets of LA. Nelson’s original journey through a Californian suburb has itself become a pop culture parody, and Never Walk Alone 2013 revisits this to see Shara trapped in a parody of a journey of her own making. The audio loop creates a filmic and farcical sense of dread as each performer becomes trapped in their own location, each one forced to negotiate their claustrophobic landscapes privately. All except Shara are also taking part in a wider journey; that of a pop culture moment passing into an enduring, historical reference point.

Between S.New Hampshire and Dewey Ave. (I Know I’ve Been) chronicled the journey taken by Shara Nelson in the 1991 music video “Unfinished Symphony”.
